Dr. Oz's Biggest Ambush Ever: Meal Makeovers to Lose Weight

Dr. Oz Meal Makeover: Pulled Chicken Sandwich from Atlanta
Atlanta is all about BBQ, all year long. BBQ is full flavor and also high in fat, sugar, and calories. Chef Richard Blais says he can cut out the unhealthy aspects and increase the flavor. He wants the folks of ATL to create new traditions with leaner, more flavorful recipes.

Chef Blais makes over Pulled Pork by replacing the pork with chicken. He brines the meat then grills it with a power packed marinade. Replace the sugar in the BBQ sauce with the acidity of vinegar.

The Numbers
Traditional Pulled Pork Sandwich has 690 calories per serving.

Dr. Oz Meal Makeover: NY Chicken Parm Sub
These elementary teachers in NY work hard and don't have time to make their own lunch so they order in – every day. Not one of the take-out meals would get Dr. Oz's approval especially not Chicken Parm extra deep fried with extra cheese. A sandwich like that packs 1,200 – 1,500 calories, more than a day's worth.

Chef Donatella Arpaia, restauranteur and judge on The Food Network's Iron Chef America, says you can't find a sandwich like that Italy. America's take on Italian food is filled with fat and calories and you can't even taste the chicken. Chef Donatella makesover this fatty favorite to bring out the real flavors.

Marinated chicken is grilled and topped with fresh cherry tomatoes and yellow tomatoes, basil and arugula.

The Numbers
Traditional Chicken Parmesan Sub has 750 calories, that's the standard without the deep frying and extra cheese.

Dr. Oz Meal Makeover: Tacos from Philadelphia
Tacos and food trucks are spectacular partners in Philadelphia yet the food choices are not necessarily healthy. Chef Jose Garces, restauranteur, Iron Chef, and cookbook author, makes over a Philly favorite and starts with choosing a leaner cut of beef.

Steak tacos are often made with fatty short ribs but Chef Garces goes for a skirt or strip steak to cut the fat. The steak marinade is filled with herbs, spices and, of course, garlic. Top the taco with a slice of avocado instead of a huge portion of guacamole, salsa and and some cheese.

The Numbers
One serving of steak tacos, or 2 tacos, has 717 calories.
Chef Jose Garces' Steak Tacos has only 546 calories.

Dr. Oz Meal Makeover: Italian Food in Washington, DC
Dr. Oz and Chef Mike Isabella ambushed a family in their home where they were loading up on pasta, bread and tennis ball-sized meatballs. One plate was enough to feed an entire family yet it was a meal for one adult in the family [and not a vegetable in sight].

Dr. Oz says you don't have to over load on carbohydrates to enjoy Italian food. Making healthy food can absolutely mean flavorful food.

Chef Isabella brings this family a healthier version of Italian with his Shrimp Scampi sauteed in olive oil instead of butter with noodles cooked in a wine sauce and topped with cherry tomatoes.

The Numbers
Traditional shrimp scampi: 840 calories.
Chef Isabella's Shrimp Scampi has only 464 calories.

Dr. Oz Good, Better, and Best Ways to Burn Fat Fast

Dr. Oz has three recommendations he calls the good, better, and best ways to burn fat.

Dr. Oz: The Good Way to Burn Fat – The Gruve
The good way to burn fat, says Dr. Oz, is to measure how much activity you get in a day. The Gruve is a program that track your daily activity and intensity of activity. Clip the monitor to your clothes as you go about your day then plug The Gruve into your computer to see a breakdown by time of how many calories burned.
Cost for The Gruve: $100.00

Dr. Oz: The Better Way to Burn Fat - Vegetarian Chili
To fill you up and boost metabolism, Dr. Oz recommends his Vegetarian Chili, click here for the recipe on DoctorOz.com. Beans in the chili provide filling protein and fiber and the spices enhance the metabolism. Dr. Oz says to adopt this habit of eating healthy and filling foods to help move your body in the right direction towards weight loss.

Dr. Oz: The Best Way to Burn Fat – EGCG Supplement
An ideal solution to weight loss is something that does the work for you to lose the weight. Dr. Oz ECGC, a powerful antioxidant found in green tea, boosts metabolism to burn fat and if you're on a diet he says it can help you stay on a diet. Dr. Oz recommends taking 500mg daily of ECGC extract.

In addition to these three tips, Dr. Oz says an essential part of weight loss is to make sure you're getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. He says eating the right combination of protein and fiber at dinner time can help support a good night's sleep.

Dr. Oz Good, Better, and Best Supplements to Fight Aging

Dr. Oz shares his choices for the best supplements to fight aging the good, best and better

Dr. Oz: The Good Supplement to Fight Aging - Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA)
Alpha Lipoic Acid is naturally made in the body however the body may not produce enough for a variety of reasons. Dr. Oz says taking ALA, 300mg daily, helps to attack high blood sugar levels which can scrape the lining of the arteries and age the body too quickly. Arteries that have been scraped are not longer pliable or supple and instead are stiff and can rupture leading to catastrophic health concerns.

Dr. Oz: The Better Supplement to Fight Aging – Plant Sterols
High cholesterol levels in the blood can wear down organs in the body, says Dr. Oz. Cholesterol can form plaques in the arteries blocking blood flow and if a plaque ruptures it can travel through the body leading to death. Dr. oz says plant sterols, 3g daily, helps the body get rid of cholesterol to help reduce associated health risks.

Dr. Oz: The Best Supplement to Fight Aging - Magnesium
High blood pressure is the most important driver of aging. Dr. Oz recommends taking 400mg daily of magnesium to support healthy blood pressure levels.

Hibiscus tea regulates cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and can help keep the body young inside, says Dr. Oz in a bonus tip on aging.

Dr. Oz Good, Better, and Best Ways to Look Younger

Every skin care routine involves a cream but which ones are the best? Dr. Jeannette Graf, dermatologist, shares her tips for good, better and best ways to look younger.

Dr. Oz: Good Cream to Look Younger - Antioxidant Cream
A moisturizing cream with SPF is great to apply in the morning but Dr. Graf also recommends that the cream have antioxidants to help reduce free-radical damage from the sun, the number one aging factor. Dr. Graf recommends Glytone Antioxidant Anti-Aging Cream, cost: $88.00.

Dr. Oz: Better Cream to Look Younger – Retinol-Based Cream
Dr. Graf says retinol is the most important ingredient everyone should be using in their skin care regimen. As we age, the skin becomes thin and loses elasticity. Dry skin is like a dry sponge and retinal creams can support hydration, moisturizing, and plumping the skin. Dr. Graf recommends Eau Thermale Avene Triacneal Cream [acne and anti-aging], cost: $60.00.

Dr. Oz: Best Cream to Look Younger – Exfoliating Cream
As we age, we lose our natural enzymes and our natural body's natural ability to remove dead skin cells. Dr. Graf likened it to an apple coated in flour, dull, then the exfoliating cream wipes away the flour and the apple is shining again. An exfoliating cream can help to remove dead skin cells and other debris that builds on the skin to bring back the skin's natural glow. Dr. Graf recommends Skin PhD AHA 7 Fruit Amidroxy Exfoliater, cost: $49.00.
