Dr. Oz Ancient Ayurvedic Secrets to Lose Weight

Sunita Mohan, [Homeopathic Doctor and] Ayurvedic nutritionist, says the key to Ayurvedic approach is getting the digestion moving. She says the approach doesn't focus on calories or carbohydrates instead the focus is on getting the digestion going so you can digest the foods you eat.

Ayurvedic Secrets to Losing Weight #1: Starter Soup to Lose Five Pounds
Start the Ayurvedic program with a cleansing mung bean based soup that is supportive of all Ayurvedic body types. Dr. Mohan says this is the only food you'll eat for the first three to four days. She calls it your best friend. Mung beans are easy to digest and they are paired with herbs the turn up the digestive process: turmeric, coriander, and cumin.

Dr. Oz says to take a multivitamin, while the soup has lots of nutrients he wants to make sure people are getting all the nutrients they need in a day as well.

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Secrets to Losing Weight #2: Hot Lemonade
Dr. Mohan wanted to lose weight but also had skin and hair issues. She created Hot Lemonade drink to provide a daily detox. To one cup hot water, add 1 tablespoon of honey, and add the juice of half of a lemon. Dr. Mohan says you can drink this tea every day forever. Fresh ginger pieces can be added to further boost the detoxing support and digestion.

Dr. Mohan also recommends eating papaya in the afternoon for a snack that also supports digestion and detoxification.

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Secrets to Losing Weight #3 - Eat 6 Slimming Flavors
Most people are familiar with the foods that go along with sweet, sour, salty, and bitter but, most people don't know about the other two flavors that exist, pungent and astringent. Spices and herbs are pungent and astringent flavors.

Dr. Mohan shares a 6 Flavor Slimming Breakfast Sundae, that's a great meal for everyone in the family, where each ingredient has one component of the 6 flavors. Bananas are astringent, yogurt is sour, berries and almonds are sweet, mint and flaxseeds are pungent.

To make cooking with the 6 Slimming Flavors easier, Dr. Mohan recommends Banyan Botanicals Kitchari Spice Mix. She says to use a teaspoon on foods while cooking to bring flavor and stimulate digestion.

From Dr. Monhan's article on DoctorOz.com, here are some examples of each of the 6 tastes:
  • Sweet: Almonds, sugar, milk, rice, wheat, large beans
  • Salty: Salt, seaweed, salted snacks
  • Sour: Lemon, yogurt, cheese, tomatoes, sour fruits, pickled fruits, tamarind
  • Pungent: Ginger, mustard, clove, hot spices, radish, chilies, garlic
  • Astringent: Beans, lentils, pomegranate, unripe bananas, apples, cabbage, potatoes, cranberries
  • Bitter: Green tea, green leafy veggies, endive, tonic water, fenugreek, rhubarb, turmeric, chocolate

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Secrets to Losing Weight #4 – Ancient Fat Burning
Dr. Mohan recommends cardamom and cumin to get the digestion going and support in burning fat. Cardamom is a cooling herb with anti-viral and antibacterial properties. Cumin aids in the flow of digestion and is also anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory.

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Secrets to Losing Weight #5 – Sesame Oil Swish
To support the removal of toxins from the body, Dr. Mohan recommends a sesame oil swish. Take a tablespoon of oil in the mouth, straight oil, and start swishing like you would mouthwash. Begin with three minutes of swishing and work your way up to 20 minutes. Swishing sesame oil in the mouth will allow the oil to mix with saliva and take out toxins. Spit the oil out through the teeth when finished swishing.

Dr. Oz says these tops are a marriage between western approaches and 5,000 years of ayurvedic practice that can result in weight loss. Dr. Mohan says you can enjoy your food and lose weight at the same time.

Dr. Oz Ancient Ayurvedic Secrets to Get Skinny

Ancient Ayurvedic secrets can not only stimulate digestion from inside out but, Dr. Oz says, it can also help people get skinny from the outside in and you don't have to go to a spa to get the benefits from the treatments. [I would not protest going to a spa to part take in the treatments...massage...sauna...bring it!] With these three tips, you can bring the spa to your home.

Candace Badgett, owner of Raj Spa, says the treatments at her spa uses 5,000 year old techniques. She says she is astounded by the results people are getting by going through their weight loss program.

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Treatment #1: Udvartana Massage
This chickpea flour based massage paste can help reduce the appearance of cellulite when scrubbed gently on the body, it can also be used as a facial. Mix chickpea flour with herbs and oil to a peanut butter consistency and spread on the skin.

Kapha oil – spring
Pitta oil – summer/fall
Vata oil – winter
Vata oil can be used for all body types

[This was a little confusing to me as there wasn't much information given. I'm not well versed on Ayurvedic techniques and this recipe calls for body type specific oils but doesn't say the name of the oils only seasons. So, are there different oils for different seasons? The description of the treatment said to herbalize the mix but didn't suggest any herbs. The site for the Raj spa wouldn't load on my computer – and I tried for three days – so I couldn't get any help there.

I did a little research online and found that the udvartana is traditionally a dry rub onto the skin with a grain and herbs custom blended to the individual. Further research into ayurvedic oils found an entire world of custom blended oils that I found quite expensive.

If you're interested in trying this, sorry I don't have a lot of information and the Show didn't give anything more than listed above. I would recommended researching ayurvedic techniques, getting in touch with an ayurvedic practitioner, or just winging it with a moisturizing oil and favorite essential oil scent.]

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Treatment #2: Svedanam Steam Massage
Crucial to the success of a weight loss program is to remove toxins that disrupt communication between cells. Ms. Badgett recommends a full body oil massage then a full body steam to push out toxins and allow the oil to penetrate into the tissues. Massage in the oil first then jump in a steam bath, sauna, or [if you don't have those in your home] jump in a hot shower and allow the steam to do the work. Dr. Oz said to be sure to wet a towel with cold water and wrap that around your head.

[Again, there was no oil recommendation for this massage.]

Dr. Oz Ayurvedic Treatment #3: Shirodhara Massage
This one may be hard to do at home and would certainly require someone to help. A oil is streamed across the forehead and allowed to run over the top of the head to pull out stress and fatigue. The rhythmic pour of oil on the forehead stimulates the densely packed nerve fibers and helps to release happy hormones to create a sense of relaxation. Dr. Oz was the volunteer for this procedure and said it was soothing and life-changing.

[This looked like the Chinese water torture treatment tested on Mythbusters without the shackles and metal face plate. I guess this treatment is the opposite end of that extreme. And I would say choose an oil that's compatible with your scalp because your head is going to be covered in oil. The Mythbusters confirmed the Chinese water torture to be completely true when Cari had a mental breakdown and went screaming into a panic.]

Dr. Oz The Five Super Fats

Dr. Oz shares five super fats that he says can help you not only get healthy but that can also support weight loss. He says to add these foods to your diet over five days and you're on the road to slimming down.

Chef Franklin Becker, is a restauranteur [and co-author of Eat & Beat Diabetes with Picture Perfect Weight Loss shared his food knowledge with Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz Super Fat #1: Olives
Chef Becker explained that olives can help to build lean body mass to burn fat and will also fill you up.

Dr. Oz Super Fat #2: Canola
Canola oil is a monounsaturated and has the lowest saturated fat content of all oils. Chef Becker says the benefits of cooking with canola oil is that it has no flavor so it won't mask other food flavors in cooking.

Dr. Oz Super Fat #3: Avocados
Avocados have that yummy, creamy texture - like butter but with less saturated fat. One cup of avocados provides 40% the recommended daily value of fiber.

Dr. Oz Super Fat #4: Pistachios
Dr. Oz loves pistachios and has previously recommended them to support healthy blood pressure and stress. Chef Becker says pistachios can help to burn fat as well.

Dr. Oz Super Fat #5: Salmon
Salmon is an affordable fish that is full of rich, decadent flavor and the healthy omega-3's help to battle inflammation in the body.

Dr. Oz challenged Chef Becker to bring all five super fats together into one meal that is under 500 calories. Chef Becker created Pistachio Dusted Salmon with Avocado and Black Olive Oil that came in at only 460 calories. Click here for the full recipe on DoctorOz.com.

Iodine is key to nourishing and supporting the thyroid but it's not a vitamin it's a chemical element. Sea veggies is a great source of iodine. One gram of Kombu, sea vegetable, provides three times the recommended intake of iodine. [There are all sorts of sea veggie snacks available at natural foods stores and grocery stores alike. They have a satisfying crunch, like potato chips, with low calories and lots of nutrients.
